Iconic and irresistable Brazilian rhythms – get to The Ellington to hear classic tunes by Brazilian superstar Sergio Mendes! Making his name back in the 1960s with his group ‘Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66’, he went on to become the undisputed master of pop-inflected Brazilian Jazz.

Listening to hit tunes like Mas Que Nada and Ultima Batucada, you’ll be whisked away to the 60s and 70s to bossa nova cool and then get grooving in your seat (or on your feet!) to the infectious rhythms of Brazil.

Sergio Mendes is a prodigious arranger, composer and musician, and this show dedicated to his music highlights his incredible legacy.

This special event will feature the extraordinary talents of Victoria Newton, Georgie Aué and Marcio Mendes along with a killer rhythm section – this is a night not to be missed! Guaranteed you’ll leave shuffling the samba, with an infectious grin!

Marcio Mendes

Marcio Mendes is a talented Brazilian musician and performer based in Perth.

No stranger to the Ellington Jazz Club stage, his unique charisma, personality and cheeky sense of humour have brought crowds to their feet dancing and singing across Europe, Brazil and Australia.

Georgie Aué

Georgie Aué (pron.A-way) is a genre-blending Australian pianist, vocalist, and songwriter. Her unique sound is a melting pot of styles – fusing jazz and blues with Brazilian jazz.

She’s performed at festivals around the country playing to sell-out audiences with shows ‘A Norah Jones Tribute’, ‘A Day In The Life – The Beatles’ and ‘Come to Brazil’. She has recently released her third album featuring Brazilian grooves and original songs – Desert Cry.

Victoria Newton

Victoria Newton’s love affair with Brazilian jazz began when she first heard the incredible music of Flora Purim and Airto Moreria whilst studying on the jazz course at WAAPA. This passion continued to blossom when she moved to the UK and became part of various Brazilian Jazz bands such as Cayenne and Samara, playing regular gigs in and around London for many years.

Several years later she had the wonderful opportunity to be part of Oxala, an original Brazilian band led by UK saxophonist and composer, Paul Booth. Victoria and Paul have collaborated on many projects over the years, and in 2014 Victoria recorded several original works on Paul Booth’s Patchwork Project, a recording featuring musical influences from Brazil, Peru, India along with jazz, folk and contemporary styles. This CD release culminated in two performances at the 2014 London International Jazz Festival.
