Music with corners. Melodies that turn when you’re not looking. Rhythms that slip between the cracks. Monk was nicknamed the “High Priest of Bebop” for all of these reasons. His music distilled all the essential elements of Bebop and then rearranged them in their purest form, never going where you expect it to, but keeping it locked in your brain for days after hearing it.
Monk without a pianist you say? The pedal steel is the perfect instrument to reimagine Monk. It thrives in the space between precision and chaos (just like Monk himself), and in the hands of a master – Lucky Oceans – the jagged, angular phrases turn to molten lava.
On this night, Jamie Oehlers, Lucky Oceans, Karl Florrison, and Ben Vanderwal take the music of Thelonious Monk and hold it up to the light—tilting, stretching and unraveling. Notes will land where they belong, or maybe where they don’t. When Monk is around time moves forward, sideways, maybe even pauses for a second just to see what happens.
Come along for the ride.
