The Ellington is proud to present, for the first time in Australia, the critically acclaimed Israel Varela Ensemble as they present Eleusis, Varela’s 11th album – a mesmerizing fusion of jazz and flamenco rhythms.

On drums and vocals, Israel Varela is joined by the extraordinary Spanish flamenco dancer Marina Paje, whose movement becomes an integral part of the music. Together, they create an electrifying interplay of rhythm and dance, with moments of euphoric improvisation and soulful introspection.

Varela’s original compositions blend intricate jazz melodies with the fiery pulse of flamenco, inspired by sacred geometry and the musical philosophies of Pythagoras and John Coltrane. The music of this album aims to transfer the listener towards his own “center” to heal the soul, a sort of journey along the road to ‘Eleusis’ (the Road of Rebirth).

Israel Varela: drums & voice
Marina Paje: dance
Brodie Stewart: piano
Zac Grafton: acoustic bass
